Children’s Hospital Cancer & Blood Disease Institute project. Cincinnati OH

CCHMC invited four artists to create 12 works of art each for their new lobby, corridor and exam rooms. In Some of these works, patients and family collaborated in creating art which was then incorporated in these works of art. This project was so fulfilling  I am so honored have art display permanently at the Children's Hospital Cancer and Blood Disease Institute. My art is about creating Sacred Spaces. I was taught this by my grandmother and my mother through sacred rituals that was passed down from mother to daughter for over thousands of years. For the most part I have in my art and in my life focused on creating sacred spaces. Why Mandalas for this project? Mandalas have been an anchor for me at times of darkness pain and confusion. The drawing of mandalas is spontaneous and untaught. When we create mandalas we are telling our own journey and experiences. Just like a prayer, drawing mandalas guides, directs, protects us. When we create a mandala, we make a personal symbol that reveals who we are at that moment, create our own sacred space, a place of protection and focus on healing. Through these works I am praying that all people be cured of cancer.
